HANNAH EMERT

A faith based mixed media artist

Art is how I express myself, and faith is at the very core of my being. Displaying my relationship with my creator shows a side of God not generally shown by Christians who use God’s name as an excuse to continue shameful and cruel behavior. This leads to people thinking that this twisted representation is God, imagined only to control the masses, when it is not.

I use my art to visually translate bible verses, so that they may exist in the gallery space, I do not add or take away from them, I am simply documenting the imagery and emotions that come to me while studying over and reading the bible verse. This is to show that the Christian faith is just another way to look at human existence. It is touchable, the Lord we believe in is love, acceptance, patience and grace. That is why the audience or wearer's interaction with the art is an important element. Human interactions like physical contact, creates attachments, which can lead to intimacy, found in all meaningful relationships. In order to emanate this feeling I work with fabric, it can serve as psychological safety and comfort, this intimate attachment can be true for all peoples.

All the fabric, however, has to be reclaimed, for two reasons; I have a serious problem with the dynamic of our throw-away nation. So I reclaim what others deem as useless and I give it new life, that leads into my second reason. By taking something society marked as invaluable and making it valuable again, I am reenacting God’s ability to redeem. In addition to fabric I use other mediums like acrylic paint and embroidery, two mediums I've grown attachments to. As a collective the materials, textures, images, and colors I employ in my work carry a great deal of background with them. These socio-cultural meanings, histories and psychological effects are essential for bringing in the emotions and feelings needed to edify the observer’s view of the intimate relationship God wishes to have with his people.

THESIS WORK SPRING 2020: DIVINE INTIMACY, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

I felt inclined to translate the ten commandments,  when I heard a sermon given by Ward Shope, Newlife Dresher’s Church Administrator, he quoted Peter Craigie, a British biblical scholar, who gave a detailed description of the purpose of the Ten Commandments. Craigie claims the ten commandments, or decalogue, “was representative of God’s love in that its injunctions, both negative and positive led not to restriction of life, but to fullness of life.” In turn, “ It demanded a response of love, not because obedience would somehow accumulate credit in the sight of God, but because the grace of God, experienced already in the liberation from Egypt, and in the divine initiative in the covenant promise, elicited such a response from man in gratitude.” The decalogue taught God’s people how they could relate to and honor him on a spiritual level, they are also guidelines and testimonials, Shope elaborates by saying “their nature is not to be restrictive but to be protective, it protects our relationships with God and it protects our relationships with each other in the community.” Through my visual translations I hoped to show the audience the true nature of the commandments and the Lord that gave them

ART TO WEAR: A KINDOM OF PRIESTS

I got my inspiration from the white linen rob that the priests would wear at the very bottom of all of there priestly garments (Aaron's garments, talked about in Exodus 28 and 39). White is supposed to represent the purity of Jesus and it's what they would have to wear to carry out their preistly duties and enter the area where they kept the Arch of the Covent, because without it they were not holy enough (Along with the weeks of cleaning in preparation.) After Jesus died we became a kingdom of priests, washed with Jesus's purity (revelations 1:5-6), this preparation  and Aaron's garments were no longer needed. We all can come before the father, washed in Jesus's purity/blood. That is the ceremony I want to represent in this ceremonial costume; A believer placing their hope in Jesus and being washed in his purity.

ART TO WEAR: THE WAY, THE TRUTH, THE LIFE

I drew my inspiration from John 14:6 which states, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." From that text I imagined a protective breast plate, that would visually translate the idea of Jesus protecting my soul, because he is the only way believers can come before the Father.

ART TO WEAR: LIFE SHROUD

Psalms 3:3 speaks of God’s everlasting Loyalty to his creation and his will to protect. The version that resonates with me is the Messianic Jewish translation of the Hebrew Bible called, the Tree of life Version. Within this translation the verse is Psalms 3:4, which reads, “But you Adonai,” meaning God in Hebrew, “are a shield around me,” the word "around" made me envision a cloak that enveloped the believer, like a shroud. Shrouds traditionally are used to wrap the dead to protect the body from insects, it was a practice that preserved and honored the body. The shroud that I have created is meant to protect the wearer in their walk of life. It wraps and encapsulates the human form, the arms are wrapped and bound in a certain way so that the wearer is able to hold the ends of the arm wraps tight, making it a conscious decision to be protected. This represents complete trust in God and in his ability to protect and provide. By willingly surrendering the use of their hands, they are saying that their Creator is the one in charge of their destiny, and that they are cared for by the God of the universe. Keeping that in mind, I used purple silk, and applied silver and gold beads, and fabric paint around the edges of the garment, in an attempt to recreate the organic formation of the stars, in the midnight sky. I felt as if this aesthetic alluded to royalty, divinity, and the universe. Placing that visual translation of the psalms on the body and making it a conscious decision, by the wearer, to let their Creator guide them through life I am acknowledging both God’s Authority and his compassion. Which to me are both vital elements to recognize, while growing in my relationship with the Lord.

EMBROIDERY

Embroidery portraits that tell a story of a woman's individual beauty, based on the process spoken of in Psalms 139: 14-16

In the amplified version of the Bible, Pslams 139 talks about being fearfully and wonderfully made by the God of the Universe, woven and embroidered with many colors! So to visually translate this I conducted close studies with a few individuals, and used color, patterns, and images that they identified with to visually translate the beauty that God made
